Why it’s hard to talk and make eye contact at the same time

When someone’s talking to you, have you noticed how they seem to keep breaking off eye contact, as if finding it hard to both talk and look you in the eye at the same time? Similarly, when you’re explaining something to someone or telling them a story, do you find yourself looking away from their eyes, so that you can concentrate on what you’re saying? A pair of Japanese researchers say that this happens because eye contact has a “unique effect” on our “cognitive control processes”. Essentially, mutual gaze is so mentally stimulating that it can be tricky to think straight and maintain eye contact at the same time.

Past research has shown that eye contact interferes with other mental tasks such as those involving visual imagination. Arguably this isn’t so surprising because both eye contact and visual imagination are obviously tapping the same mental domain. In their new paper in Cognition, Shogo Kajimura and Michio Nomura tested whether eye contact also interferes with our ability to generate verbs in a word task, and whether this happens in all cases, or only when the verb generation task is made extra difficult.

Twenty-six participants were asked to look directly at a stranger’s face shown on-screen, while simultaneously performing an auditory verb generation task. Six men’s and women’s faces featured in the study, and were shown either looking straight at the participant or with their gaze averted. The faces were video animated so they appeared naturally, blinking and breathing. Each trial, the participant looked at the face, heard a noun, then their task was to respond out loud with a verb that could be used with the noun in a sentence.

The researchers used a range of nouns that are easier or harder to respond to, based on how strongly associated to the noun any related verbs are (i.e. retrieval demands high or low); and whether one possible response is much more dominant than any others versus there being many equally plausible alternatives (i.e. selection demands high or low).

To take one example, the noun “milk” is easy on both measures, because it’s strongly associated with “drink” and much more so than any other verb.

The key result is that participants were much slower at the verb generation task when making eye contact with the face on-screen, as opposed to when the face’s gaze was averted, but only in the most difficult version of the verb generation task, when retrieval and selection demands were high.

Kajimura and Nomura said this shows that eye contact doesn’t directly interfere with mental processes specifically related to verb generation – if it did, then performance times ought to have been longer for eye contact across easy and difficult versions of the verb task. Instead, they said the results are consistent with the idea that eye contact drains our more general cognitive resources – the kind that we need to draw on when some other task, such as speaking, becomes too difficult to be handled by domain-specific resources. That’s why the more complicated the story you’re telling (or excuse you’re making), the more likely you are to need to break off eye contact.

Looking away when we’re talking is something most of us do instinctively as adults, but this isn’t necessarily the case for children. Past research has shown that young children can benefit from being taught to avert their gaze when they’re thinking.

Sarcasm Can Stimulate This Highly Desirable Mental Skill

Sarcasm has an unexpected mental benefit.

Sarcasm can actually promote creative thinking, a new study finds.

Sarcasm may not even be detrimental to relationships, if used between people who know each other.

Despite being considered one of the lowest forms of wit, sarcasm actually requires considerable mental powers to produce.

Professor Francesca Gino, one of the study’s authors, explained:

“To create or decode sarcasm, both the expressers and recipients of sarcasm need to overcome the contradiction (i.e., psychological distance) between the literal and actual meanings of the sarcastic expressions.

This is a process that activates and is facilitated by abstraction, which in turn promotes creative thinking.”

Now researchers have discovered that sarcasm can actually causecreativity, rather than just being its byproduct.

Professor Gino said:

“Not only did we demonstrate the causal effect of expressing sarcasm on creativity and explore the relational cost sarcasm expressers and recipients have to endure, we also demonstrated, for the first time, the cognitive benefit sarcasm recipients could reap.

Additionally, for the first time, our research proposed and has shown that to minimize the relational cost while still benefiting creatively, sarcasm is better used between people who have a trusting relationship.”

Participants in the study were put into three different conditions to have a simulated conversation: neutral, sarcastic or sincere.

Professor Adam Galinsky, a study co-author, explained the results:

“Those in the sarcasm conditions subsequently performed better on creativity tasks than those in the sincere conditions or the control condition.

This suggests that sarcasm has the potential to catalyze creativity in everyone.

That being said, although not the focus of our research, it is possible that naturally creative people are also more likely to use sarcasm, making it an outcome instead of [a] cause in this relationship.”

Amongst people who are comfortable with each other, sarcasm does not seem at all detrimental.

Professor Galinsky said:

“While most previous research seems to suggest that sarcasm is detrimental to effective communication because it is perceived to be more contemptuous than sincerity, we found that, unlike sarcasm between parties who distrust each other, sarcasm between individuals who share a trusting relationship does not generate more contempt than sincerity.”

We have an unfortunate tendency to assume we’re morally superior to others

“How did our politics get so poisonous? We drank too much of the poison. There’s a gentle high to the condemnation. And you know you’re right, right? You know you’re right.” Steven Colbert

Wrapping up his coverage of the US election, Colbert touched on something that may hold true even beyond partisan politics: most of us seem to think we’re more moral than other people. Now a study in Social Psychological and Personality Science has provided fresh evidence supporting Colbert’s observation. Our tendency to see ourselves as better than average – already well-established in psychology in relation to things like driving ability and attractiveness – applies to our sense of our own morality, more strongly than it does to other aspects of ourselves. And the new research shows just how irrational this really is.

There are some contexts where it makes sense to view your own qualities as unusual. The most obvious is when you can make a clear comparison, such as knowing your IQ is 140 and that the average is 100. The second, raised by study authors Ben Tappin and Ryan McKay, is when you know you are strong on a trait, with no reason to think that should be typical of others. If it strikes me one day that I have a peculiar strength – say that I’m far better at observing canine hunger than any other doggy state – it wouldn’t make sense to assume that everyone else has this peculiar skill too.

But in other contexts, it’s irrational to assume that our own skills are unusual. Imagine I’m very kind and nurturing to kittens, much more so than I am to cockroaches. Without a Kitten-Kindness psych-test score proving I’m objectively superior, and knowing full well that most people have a fondness for softer, non-vermin animals, then to presume I’m special in this area would be irrational. It would make more sense to either drop my own self-rating, or award high ratings on this trait to everyone. This balancing-out is called social projection – if I do it, similar people probably do it as well.

The question Tappin and McKay set out to test is whether we view our morality, as compared with other traits, more like kitten cuddling or dog perception; that is, whether we see our own moral virtues as special or if instead we socially project and assume others are like us.

The researchers recruited 270 participants from an online portal and asked them to rate themselves and the average person on 30 traits, and to rate the desirability of each one. A third of the traits related to the domain of morality (e.g., honest, principled), a third sociability (warm, family oriented) and a third agency (hard working, competent), and Tappin and McKay computed how similar each participant was to the rest of the sample on each of these domains. The more similar the participants rated themselves on these different domains then, if they were being logical about it, the more they should have socially projected and assumed that when they were high on a trait, the average person would be too.

As a rule, the participants engaged in social projection, which helped them to rate others accurately. But in the morality domain, the participants should have socially projected much more than they did. Instead, their ratings were influenced by the desirability of the moral traits, meaning that participants rated particularly prized traits like trustworthiness as 6.1 for themselves, but only 4.3 for others. Traits like competence and warmth in the other domains were also highly prized, but the participants didn’t inflate their scores here in the same way. In short, we seem to be especially prone to seeing ourselves as morally superior.

Sometimes mismatches between ratings of self and others have a rational basis, but not when it comes to our moral superiority, where we are led away from accuracy by our desire to be a certain way. The researchers point out that it’s particularly easy to make this kind of error when it comes to morality because we aren’t privy to other people’s motivations, yet routinely rationalise our own actions and lapses.

Since the discovery of these kinds of “positivity illusions”, scholars have argued that they prop up our wellbeing, but in this dataset, these irrational enhancements of moral superiority were not associated with greater wellbeing or self-esteem. Perhaps we expect that feeling morally superior will give us peace of mind… but ultimately, it doesn’t deliver. Something to remind ourselves in these trying political times.

Πως μπορώ να ξεπεράσω την Χριστουγεννιάτικη κατάθλιψη;

Πως δημιουργείται η "Μελαγχολία των Γιορτών" ή η "Κατάθλιψη των Χριστουγέννων";

Πως μπορούμε να την αντιμετωπίσουμε;

Δώσε χρόνο στον εαυτό σου και αναλογίσου τι θα ήθελες να … σου κάνεις δώρο! Ναι, τα δώρα δεν είναι μόνο για τους άλλους, άλλωστε εσύ δεν αξίζεις ίσως και το καλύτερο δώρο;
Ξεκίνησε να γυμνάζεσαι, όχι απαραίτητα σκληρά και έντονα. Με την γυμναστική όπως γνωρίζουμε όλοι ο οργανισμός μας εκλύει τα φυσικά μας αντικαταθλιπτικά, γιατί να μην τα χρησιμοποιήσουμε;

The Creative Therapy That Helps Reduce Depression

Higher self-esteem from a common creative therapy that also helps reduce depression.

Music therapy can reduce depression in young people with behaviour problems, new research finds.

Music therapy also increased self-esteem compared to those who received the usual treatment without the therapy.

The conclusions come from the largest every study of its kind.

It involved 251 children, only half of whom were given music therapy.

The music therapy itself included things like the therapist asking children to describe how they felt by playing a tune.

All the children in the study were being treated for behavioural, emotional or developmental problems.

The results showed that those who received the music therapy had higher self-esteem and reduced depression in comparison to those that had care as usual.

Professor Sam Porter, who led the study, said:

“This study is hugely significant in terms of determining effective treatments for children and young people with behavioural problems and mental health needs.

The findings contained in our report should be considered by healthcare providers and commissioners when making decisions about the sort of care for young people that they wish to support.”

Ciara Reilly, Chief Executive of Every Day Harmony, a music therapy charity, said:

“Music therapy has often been used with children and young people with particular mental health needs, but this is the first time its effectiveness has been shown by a definitive randomised controlled trail in a clinical setting.

The findings are dramatic and underscore the need for music therapy to be made available as a mainstream treatment option.

For a long time we have relied on anecdotal evidence and small-scale research findings about how well music therapy works.

Now we have robust clinical evidence to show its beneficial effects.”

Ζευγάρια: κοινό ή χωριστό ταμείο;

Συχνά, αυτό το γεγονός τα ζευγάρια το εξηγούν ως εξής: «Μοιραζόμαστε τις οικονομικές υποχρεώσεις κι έτσι ο καθένας αναλαμβάνει το δικό του μερίδιο ευθύνης». Για παράδειγμα,. ο ένας πληρώνει το ενοίκιο και ο άλλος τούς λογαριασμούς, ο ένας έχει αναλάβει τα μερικά έξοδα των παιδιών (ρούχα, παπούτσια, σχολικά) και ο άλλος κάποια άλλα (φροντιστήρια, δραστηριότητες).Θα μπορούσε κανείς να σκεφτεί ότι πρόκειται για μία έντιμη και ενδεχομένως δίκαιη συμφωνία, η οποία, μάλιστα, αν τηρείται, μπορεί να λειτουργήσει μια χαρά κι ως εκ τούτου, γιατί όχι; Γιατί να μην έχουν ξεχωριστούς λογαριασμούς; Γιατί να τα μπλέκουν; Ή μήπως δεν είναι έτσι;

Στον αντίλογο αυτής της συνήθειας (ή αυτής της τακτικής), παρουσιάζεται μία μάλλον απλή ένσταση: «Τι σημαίνει ξεχωριστά; Χωριστά από τι; Τι ξεχωρίζεται;». Φυσικά και αναπόφευκτα αυτό που ξεχωρίζεται είναι ο ένας σύζυγος από τον άλλον.Αυτό όμως τι εξυπηρετεί, από τι μας προστατεύει; Δεν υπονοείται εδώ η έλλειψη εμπιστοσύνης μεταξύ των δύο συντρόφων;Δεν υπονομεύεται έτσι η έννοια του «μαζί»;Και αν, τελικά -κι αυτό ίσως είναι το σημαντικότερο-αν δεν μπορούμε να μοιραστούμε τα εισοδήματά μας, τότε πως μπορούμε να μοιραστούμε τα συναισθήματά μας;

Clinton’s and Trump’s personality profiles, according to psychologists

Today the American people are voting to choose between two of the most unpopular Presidential candidates in history. Commentators have speculated that part of the reason for the candidates’ unpopularity is their personality profiles. Clinton and Trump would seem to agree – both have repeatedly attacked each other’s characters and temperaments. But what exactly are their personality profiles, as judged as objectively as possible by personality psychologists?

For a paper published online at Personality and Individual Differences – and spotted by psychology writer Rolf Degan – 10 experts in the HEXACO method of measuring personality (7 men, 3 women, all avid followers of the election) completed a 100-item profile of each candidate. Distilling the findings, Beth Visser and her colleagues conclude that voters effectively have a choice between a bold and narcissistic, antisocial leader willing to make dramatic changes, and a Machiavellian but highly conscientious leader with a steady hand – Trump or Clinton. “Ultimately, this is a decision that voters, and not academics, will have to decide,” they write.

The HEXACO personality model is similar to the more established five-factor model of personality, the most notable difference being a sixth dimension – Honesty-Humility. The psychologists rated both candidates low on this. Zooming in on the dimension’s four facets, Trump scored very low on sincerity, fairness, and greed avoidance and exceptionally low in modesty. Clinton was seen as normal on fairness and greed avoidance, but low on sincerity and very low on modesty.

Turning to the other personality dimensions, the psychologists also rated both candidates to be low on the Emotionality-Altruism dimension (made up of facets like fearfulness and anxiety). Whereas Clinton was rated normal on Extraversion and Agreeableness, Trump was rated high and extremely low, respectively. Finally, the psychologists rated Clinton high on conscientiousness and openness, but Trump low on both these traits.

Mapping these profiles onto the so-called Dark Triad of personality traits – narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy – the researchers say that Trump’s personality has clear signs of narcissism and psychopathy (see also). Indeed, compared to population norms for the HEXACO test, he scored below the first percentile for agreeableness. Meanwhile, they said Clinton’s mix of low humility – including being on only the sixth percentile for modesty – and low emotionality and high conscientiousness, resembled a typical Machiavellian personality profile, “which seems consistent with the public’s perception of her as a career politician who calculates what needs to be done to succeed.”

Given the extremely antisocial nature of Trump’s personality, as rated by the psychologists and observed by media commentators, why does he command such popularity? “One possibility,” Visser and her colleagues speculated, “is that his non-personality skills (e.g. as a businessman) are seen as more relevant than his personality flaws.”

Meanwhile, relevant to the negative public perception of Clinton’s personality might be the fact that her profile is especially unusual when compared against the personality test norms for women, in relation to her low scores for traits like humility and emotionality. That is, some people might be judging Clinton harshly for having more stereotypically masculine traits. Such an interpretation would be consistent with recent research showing that female bosses are judged more harshly than their male counterparts for disrespectful behaviour.

Some may question the appropriateness of psychologists rating political figures in the manner of this study. In fact rightly or wrongly, there is a long tradition of psychologists attempting to profile the personality of American presidents. For example, a paper from 1978looked into the possibility of predicting US presidents’ personalities based on their past speeches. The paper begins, “…with such prior knowledge of potential flaws of personality or real political inclinations, some national traumas might be avoided – at the voting booth.”

Visser and her colleagues are careful to acknowledge that the psychologists they recruited were rating the “public personalities” of the candidates. They also admitted the possibility of bias in that seven of the ten psychologist raters self-identified as left-leaning in their political persuasion. However, the researchers pointed out that whereas Trump supporters claim he is sincere while Clinton is dishonest, and vice versa for Clinton supporters, the psychologists in fact rated both candidates as being very low in sincerity – an apparent sign of impartiality, even if not particularly promising for the future of America.

Υπάρχει φιλία ανάμεσα σε άντρες και γυναίκες;

This mental quirk could explain why you’re always running late

We all have routes that are part of our daily lives, whether it’s the way to the local convenience store, school or the office. How does this deep familiarity affect the way our brains represent the space and our ability to move through it?

Based in part on what we’ve learned from studies of so-called “grid cells” in rats’ brains, Anna Jafarpour at the University of California, Berkeley and Hugo Spiers at University College London predicted that greater familiarity with an area would lead us to overestimate its physical extent – in essence, they thought a more detailed neural representation would make that space seem larger. In turn, they predicted that same detail would make us more likely to exaggerate the walking time to destinations reached through that familiar space.

In fact, while their new findings published in Hippocampus suggest spatial familiarity does indeed stretch our perception of the magnitude of physical distance, it has the opposite effect on our judgments of travel times through that space – that is, we underestimate how long it will take us to travel through highly familiar routes. It’s a mental quirk that might just provide us with a new excuse for why we’re so often running late.

Jafarpour and Spiers asked a group of young international students who’d been living in the same building – William Goodenough House – in the Bloomsbury area of London for nine months (don’t panic, this was pre-Brexit), to sketch a map of the area on a sheet of A4. They could take as long as they liked to complete their sketch.

The students – 13 men and 7 women – had walking experience in the area, but no driving experience. A to-scale image of the building was marked on their A4 sheet as a guide. The students had to sketch with the top of the sheet representing south – this was to stop them drawing a map from memory because, of course, maps always have north at the top.

Next, the students answered questions about walking time to different destinations in Bloomsbury from their building. Finally, they were shown a satellite map of the area and asked to mark routes they walked on a daily basis.

Looking at the way the students had sketched the areas of Bloomsbury with which they were most familiar (based on where they’d indicated they walked on a daily basis), it was apparent that they overestimated the physical extent of these routes – that is, they had drawn these areas too big compared with how they drew less familiar areas. In contrast, they underestimated the walking time of routes with which they were most familiar compared with less familiar.

This seems like a contradiction – the students expected to arrive sooner at destinations reached via familiar routes that their own sketches suggested were longer than less familiar routes. It’s a quirk that raises many interesting questions about how familiarity affects the brain’s representation of time and space.

The researchers discuss several possible explanations, including that there are separate neural systems for computing spatial extent and time-to-travel through that space. Related to this is the possibility that we judge the time-to-travel through familiar routes using our experience-based knowledge, whereas drawing a “south-is-up” map cannot be based on knowledge and must be freshly reconstructed from the brain’s spatial representation of the area.

These are fascinating questions for future research to address, but for now the everyday implication is that we are especially likely to underestimate the time it takes us to walk the routes with which we are most familiar – like to our school or office. Your new excuse for tardiness – “Sorry I’m late sir, my brain’s got a problem judging ETAs for familiar routes”.

Ναι, μιλάμε για το «Σύνδρομο της Άδειας Φωλιάς». Μπορεί να σας επηρεάσει ψυχολογικά; Τι πρέπει να κάνετε για να γίνει η μετάβαση στη νέα κατάσταση όπου μένετε μόνοι στο σπίτι; Πως θα το περάσετε όσο πιο ανώδυνα γίνεται; Το βιώνουν όλοι οι γονείς όταν φεύγουν τα παιδιά τους από το σπίτι;

Πώς μπορώ να αντιμετωπίσω το «Σύνδρομο της Άδειας Φωλιάς»;

Teens reject junk food when healthy eating is framed as rebellion

Crisps, coke, and chocolate bars. What might be a special treat for some of us, is now a multi-billion pound industry and a staple of many people’s diets. Advertising campaigns from the snack food companies, often starring sports stars, send the message that we can offset any adverse effects of consuming their products simply by getting more physical exercise. But you can’t really “run off” a burger – recent studies show a lack of exercise is not to blame for rising obesity rates, bad diets are the real driver.

Interventions to help reduce junk food consumption are especially important for children and adolescents – prevention is better than cure in this context because obesity is so difficult to treat. Unfortunately, while health education in the classroom has shown some success among young children, adolescents have been notoriously hard to reach.

But now a large-scale study published in PNAS has tried an innovative approach to change teenagers’ attitudes towards healthy eating, and the results are promising. The researchers, led by Christopher Bryan at the University of Chicago and David Yeager at the University of Texas at Austin, argued that previous interventions have probably been unsuccessful because of a major flaw: they focused on a future, healthier you and assumed that this would be enough motivation for adolescents. In contrast, the new intervention cleverly exploits teenagers’ instinct for rebelliousness and autonomy, and the value they place on social justice.

Bryan, Yeager and their colleagues recruited over 500 teenagers (aged 13 to 14; they were the entire eighth grade at a suburban middle school in Texas) and randomly assigned some to a traditional public health appeal, others to a no-treatment control, and the remainder to receive the innovative intervention. This last group read an exposé article on the food industry. It spilled the beans about the manipulative and deceptive strategies used to make junk food more addictive and to portray the products as healthy. It also included pictures of four executives and consultants of the food industry, described as stereotypical “controlling, hypocritical adult[s]”. The hope was that these adolescents would now see choosing healthy foods as an act of autonomy and independence.

The article also explained how advertising campaigns specifically target very young and poor people, causing harm for these vulnerable groups. The researchers hoped that healthy eating could be perceived as a rebellion against social injustice.

Afterwards, the participants in this condition read a (fictitious) survey of older adolescents who wanted to “fight back against the companies by buying and eating less processed food”. Finally, these participants wrote an essay summarising why they thought people were outraged and how to rebel against the food industry – the idea was to make sure that the teenagers internalised the message.

After the exposé intervention, but not the control conditions, participants associated healthy eating with autonomy and social justice. They also rated healthy eating as being more appealing. Importantly, there were also some promising effects of the new intervention on actual behaviour. A day later the students were offered a choice of snacks and drinks in a seemingly unrelated context (announced as a reward for their hard work during the recent exam period). The teens in the exposé condition, but not the control groups, chose healthy snacks and drinks (such as fruit or water) more often over unhealthy options (like biscuits and coke). As a consequence, the exposé group consumed on average 3.6g less sugar than the controls, which corresponds to almost one teaspoon and more than 10 per cent of the daily recommended intake. Two days later, the teenagers in the exposé intervention condition were also angrier in response to sugary drink ads and less tempted to drink the sodas.

This simple classroom intervention influenced real-life choices and attitudes for at least two days whereas traditional educational approaches have struggled to have any influence at all. In this study, the researchers also did not find a significant difference between the traditional health appeal and no-treatment condition – simply educating adolescents about the effects of junk food on the body was just as (in)effective as doing nothing.

These results highlight the promise of finding new, creative approaches to reduce unhealthy eating among teenagers. But while the study shows encouraging results, it has important limitations. First, it largely relies on self-report measures. The teenagers reported on questionnaires how appealing they find healthy eating, which snacks and drinks they want, and how angry they were about soda ads. These responses might not accurately reflect their true beliefs – they may have just responded in a way they thought was expected of them. After all, the participants were cued to be angry at the food industry: they were asked to write an essay explaining why a lot of people are outraged – not being outraged did not appear to be an option.

To avoid this bias, the researchers did not disclose the real aim of the study to their participants. Rather, the intervention was disguised as an opportunity to provide feedback on a new school curriculum. Also the snack choice on day two was masked as a reward for their hard work throughout the preceding months, but it’s still possible that the teenagers may have guessed what the study was really about and the researchers did not control for this. Future studies could use more implicit measures, such as skin conductance or the Implicit Association Test, to test for subconscious attitudes. Alternatively, neuroimaging could be used to check if junk food is perceived as less rewarding in terms of brain response, which would arguably provide a more objective measure than self-report.

Also, while the effects lasted for two days, successful interventions need to be beneficial in the long-term. It is important to check if teenagers still make healthy food choices months after the experiment or if it was just a fleeting effect. And would they still be motivated by autonomy and social justice as adults? Or would we need to appeal to different values when they are older, requiring a new intervention?

Associating a healthy diet with adolescents’ own values seems to be a promising avenue to prevent obesity. But future studies will need to evaluate and develop these interventions further to ensure that teenagers make healthy choices and are not “buttered up” by the food industry.
